As an English teacher I spent the early part of my career in a village in the region of Vidharbha in Maharashtra. While I enjoyed my vocation as a teacher, I was distressed by the poverty that I witnessed around me. Farmer suicides were rampant in our region. Later when I moved to the city of Nagpur, I was equally distressed by the poverty I witnessed in urban areas. The sight of little children in the slum areas deprived of even basic amenities made me uncomfortable. I reflected and asked myself how will my present vocation of teaching English make a tangible difference to the life of even one child. I asked myself what can I do beyond my present vocation to make a meaningful difference in the life of the less privileged.This question took me to the path of innovation having been inspired by the biography of the agriculture scientist George Washington Carver. He says, Start where you are and with what you have. Never stop at anything.’ From his life I realised the power of observation. I realised that through innovation of product and business innovations, we could create wealth creating opportunities for our communities and this will augment a better life for these families. And as Paulo Coelho says, ‘When you really want to achieve something, the whole universe conspires to help you achieve it.'
